M. Harris Design - Recap of 2018
Wow. Where do I even begin?! I’m mostly just writing this post for me, so I can look back and remember all the things about this crazy awesome year. But a lot of it is business-related, so I figured I’d make it public for anyone who cares to read!
This year has been the best one to date, and a lot has happened! Let’s just break it down starting at the beginning of the year.
January - I took on my very first wedding invitation suite, my own! I had been doing calligraphy as a side hustle at this point, but this was the very first wedding that I designed everything from start to finish. It was so fun getting to put all the things I love about wedding invitations into my own suite! This was also the first time I worked with vellum and wax seals which have become two of my favorite things to use in any invitation suite.
February - I took on another wedding on top of my own, which was a little crazy to do during my own engagement looking back on it. It was kind of nice to have something to focus on other than my own wedding though - it kept me grounded while still doing something I love.
March - My first invitation suite went out the door! It was so fun to see it come together and take it to the post office myself.
April - I packed up my entire life and moved my stuff from Birmingham, AL to Louisville, Kentucky, where me and my husband currently live. I spent a week getting everything settled in and then came back to Birmingham to finish up at my old job and to finish up wedding planning.
May - Me and Wade got married in Birmingham! It was honestly the best day of my life. We had all of our favorite things and all of our favorite people there. Despite what the forecast said, the weather was perfect for our dream outdoor wedding and I praise God for that special and sweet day! If you want to see pics/a recap of the day, check out this post
June - We honeymooned in Jamaica and came back to our home sweet home in Louisville. Before we moved here for good, I had no idea what I was going to do work-wise. But once we got here, there were just so many affirmations for me to go full-time with my business. So in June of 2018, I officially launched M. Harris Design! I got a new name, and a new business name :) I had already been working with several clients, and I just continued that after my business launch.
July - Wedding season was in full swing and I was blessed with the opportunity to work with some amazing brides over the summer.
August - I launched my online shop! Aside from wedding invitations, I also offer various cards, prints, personal stationery, and other hand-lettered items. I love being able to run my shop straight out of my home.
September - Things finally started to slow down a little after the craziness of summer wedding season. I used this month to write a lot, work on some rebranding, make tweaks on my website, set up my email list, and just do things for me and my business.
October - I got to be a part of a fun styled shoot and design everything for my Christmas collection. I also FINALLY got around to calligraphing mine and Wade’s vows! It was so fun to work on something for us, and now they’re proudly hanging in our room to serve as a reminder of the promises we made to each other just 7 months ago.
November - I launched my Christmas collection! I would consider November to be my most successful month in business so far. I have no idea how and it definitely came out of nowhere. I was honestly back and forth on whether or not I was going to offer Christmas cards and a holiday collection, but I’m so glad I did it! It was a hit.
December - Welp, here we are! December was great. I got to wrap up a few branding projects I have been working on, I’ve worked with some other awesome wedding vendors for some giveaways, and I’m going strong into 2019 and getting to work with some pretty incredible brides.
It has been SUCH an exciting year! 2018 marks the year that I officially went full time with my business, and I praise the Lord for giving me the opportunity to do something that I love, and to work with such incredible people. I also want to encourage anyone else out there - designers, writers, photographers, entrepreneurs, whoever you are - to write a recap every year. I can’t wait to make this a tradition and to look back on all the ways I’ve grown over the years. I am so excited to see what 2019 holds. Let’s do this!
